"Тоже вариант" (q) небезызвестный анекдот.
Я лично к творчеству Толкиена отношусь достаточно прохладно, но это еще не повод
для того чтобы делать далеко идущие выводы о качественных соотношениях в фэнтези
и HФ. Кроме того из всех известных классификаций художественной литературы
приемлемой для себя я считаю только одну - ту самую, которая упоминается в
"Хромой судьбе".

Ну, в эхотаге таких крепостей навалом. В реальном мире они встpечаются
реже, как правило данным тpебованиям более отвечают замковые стены, чем
кpепостные.

По-моему, морской огурец ничем не отличается от голотурии, последняя же
тождественна трепангу. Трепангов точно едят, в том числе, кажется, и солеными.

Зря ты так. "Рубеж" хорош, весьма хорош. К чернухе я бы его не относил, иначе
тогда получается, что вся наша жизнь - чернуха.

Ну не так уж у него всё ясно. Вот некоторые вопросы:
- Как орки размножаются? (Ничего про их дам у него не читал).
- Тот же вопрос про гномов.
- Почему орки служившие Саурону (сделанные из эльфов) были мельче и
слабее чем орки Сарумана (переделанные люди)?
- Нигде не нашёл упоминания о том потеряли ли бессмертие эльфы
ставшие орками.
- Так и непонял откуда Моргот aka Мелькор достал драконов.
Если ещё вспомню то напишу.
ЗЫ: Конечно наличие всех этих вопросов может означать и то что я
невнимательный склеротик, но всётаки.... ~;)

Hасчёт существования "ворягов" я сомневаюсь. Наверное имелись ввиду вастаки.
Вастаки - "Смуглолицые; в Белерианде появились после Дагор Браголлах и
сражались на обеих сторонах в Нирнаэф Арноэдиад" (с)
Конечно же он их не создавал, атолько посеял в ихдушах зло.

I am with Gothmog on this book. Stake me, behead me, immerse me into a river (of
holy water, optionally), drag me out to the sunlight, but I loathed VotM. To
start with, I dislike m(r)s Golden's apparent style - at least both VotM and
Dance of the Dead (haven't read her other books) were WAY too melodramatic
(maybe that's the thing with female writers? Sexist male chauvinistic pig, I
know). I can't help but imagine hordes of pale romantic 18 years old girls
weeping rivers of blissful tears onto their pages. Now, to the book at hand...
jander - whiner. Period. There is really little else I could say about him. By
itself, the idea of oh-so-kindhearted vampire who abhors his nature always made
me laugh ("drinks and weeps, drinks and weeps", heh-heh...if you hate it so much
just drag yer sorry bottom out under the sunlight right then, huh?). But
jander's "suffering" is so grotesque it even overshadows the World of Darkness
trademarked hippie vampires. "The flower withered at my touch, oh-my-god, sorrow
of sorrows!". Bleh.
sasha - "When I was 18 years old", van helsing begun, relaxing in his chair... I
am very biased and very touchy on these matters, but I never ever encountered a
character as evil, maniacal and disgusting as the "vampire hunter" archetype.
Sure, going out into the night to slaughter some girls because they are "evil
monsters"...let me say I find the motivations of Jack the Ripper (the original
one :) more valid and less shakey than these.
Strahd - Ye Generic Evil McGuffin straight from the Monster Manual. Boring and
cliched. Perhaps this is 'canon' (as it combines well with I6 and
RQ3/RM1...which, in my book, doesn't do anything good to the mentioned
releases), but then I'll rather make some canon of my own. -My- Strahd is Strahd
of "I, Strahd" (no pun intended). Propaganda? Yeah, sure, he sat for 400 years
making up events just so van richten could read and spread it in 735...bah.
Mood - wussy river-of-tears melodrama and chips and bits of high fantasy.
Absolutely nothing Gothic (although probably very "goth"..:E ). Very little of
horror, misery, hatred and insanity I expect from something related to
Ravenloft.
Good points - yeah, I found a couple. The scene when Strahd and jander play
music together was GREAT. Truly disturbing and insane, probably the only real
ravenloftesque fragment. This scene alone (and IMO only) makes the book worth
loaning. The werewolf girl was quite interesting person. The scene of Strahd
gifting jander with a girl toy/morcel, although did not really made sense, was
quite amusing. Reminds of Lestat (thumbs up) trying to make a right vampire out
of louis (thumbs down) in "Interview with a vampire", except that in VotM jander
is supposed to be Strahd's teacher, not vice versa.
Resumee...if you want another book where Evil is Punished and Good Heroes
Triumph, shedding a tear or two upon the untimely passed comrades in the end
(and a gallon or two in the process), if you want another book with a clash of
the avataras of Alignments(TM) - more power to you. If, however, you want your
demiplane a tunnel of misery, madness and corruption, where the only light seems
to come from its exit (and ends up being a frontlight of an incoming train ;),
if you want your 'villains' to have motivations and personality - avoid it. Get
"I, Strahd" instead - it is THE Ravenloft novel (yeah, it was my introduction to
Ravenloft aside of Strahd's Possession CRPG, so I am not denying I am biased).
VotM is not lame per se, author is skilled (else it would be 1 drop) - but this
is absolutely not my cup of blood. 2 drops.

PS - after getting COTNV, I am happy to know that Dark Powers spoiled jander's
plan of oh-so pathetic, dramatic and touching suicide. Happier still I am that
he is an NPC in an adventure... if I'll play it instead of DMing it, I'll make
sure one of us won't survive the encounter >;) Now, proceed to your shedule of
staking, beheading, river-immersing, garlic-feeding and sunlight-dragging yours
truly for befouling your favorite kindhearted "vampire" ;-)

I have really mixed feelings on this one. Not like there is just good stuff and
bad stuff (there is), but a lot of things are good and bad in the same time.
To start with, while I am not particularly a Soth fan, among the dragonlance
characters he still was the best (do I have to point that I loathe all things
dragonlance released after chronicles trilogy/DL modules?). I liked his tragic
past, but it wasn't really highlighted as affecting his present. In other hand,
the features of present (i.e. service to takhisis, love to kitiara etc) leave me
totally indifferent. I always considered Soth's venture to Ravenloft a pure
marketing move, albeit artistically successful one (and, ironically,
commercially failed - few dragonlance fans began to buy Ravenloft products
afterwards). OK, now to the book at hand...
Plot - weak. The premise sucks (siege of Palanthas through Soth's eyes is good,
especially -his- ethical evaluation of events, such as a duel with tanis - but
the whole issue of going after kitiara strikes me as silly, I mean, who in the 9
hells would even -sympathize- such a wicked bitch, let alone -love- her?!). The
majority of a storyline sounds too much like a munchfest. "And then Soth killed
some orcs. And then he killed some trolls. And then he met some more orcs, and
killed them, too". The ending, however, is pretty good.
Atmosphere - a fair share of horror, but absolutely not gothic. It's more like a
munchkin's horror - like meeting in battle something he could NOT defeat, for
example :) Many scary monsters and some splatter/gore scenes, but nothing really
grim and desperate. Of all the Ravenloft novels I've read (with the exception of
horrible "shadowborn") KotBR is a most FANTASY horror.
Soth - his past finally begun playing its role, and this is written beautifully.
Lowder wrote Soth as a strong person who considers only himself responsible for
his curse, accepts it and regrets nothing he did, and it really raised my
opinion on Soth many times. He has a fair share of violent outbreaks, that
strike me as senseless, but mostly his actions are very well done. A pity the
plot itself makes him just swing his sword 70 percent of book - his personality
could be exploited more dramatical ways.
Strahd - as per VotM, really. Same "evil bastard", even more so in attempt to
make Soth look a better person next to him (Soth, really, reminds pretty much of
Strahd as per "I, Strahd" :) As an example of cunning manipulative villain, he
is ok, but I prefer Strahd colored in the shades of grey.
NPCs - Magda is quite interesting, although for a helpless vistani nobody caught
between a vampire lord, another vampire lord, a crazy werething and an undead
knight she shows quite a LOT of self-possession. Azrael as a pure personality is
amusing in his "the voices made me do this" and wretchness (sp), but a DWARF? A
wereBADGER?! Is it someone's sick joke? Gundar makes just a cameo appearance,
but his son Medrot (right?) is detailed well, and is truly a horrific character.
One of strongest points in the book. I tend -very- much to sympathize the
"villains" and abhor the "good guys" in books (and everywhere else), but I was
really gleeful when Soth and Azrael butchered the little bastard >:E
Overall - weak plot and way too combat-ridden action, but mostly cool characters
and some great scenes. I'd rate it 4 for dragonlance fans, but since I am not
one, I'll give 3 drops.

Not bad. Not really a masterpiece, but not bad at all. M(r)s Golden once again
writes a horror-tainted fantasy melodrama, but now does not overdose the wails
and hugs. The book is set in the island domain of Souragne (which, I guess, is
supposed to be highly inspired by New Orleans/voodoo/etc, but somehow never
stroke me as such). A theatre boat flees Darkon after a mysterious murder of a
lead actress, and docks at Souragne mainly to pursue the captain's more darker,
hidden interests, while the main character, a white-haired actress Larissa,
feels strange deja vu on this supposedly never before visited island...
The Good. A plot is twisted and full of mystery and surprise. It really keeps
you locked on the pages, as more and more dark secrets from the past (and
present) are uncovered. Almost all characters are great - Larissa is pretty,
smart and for a horror heroine quite strong and brave, Lond is wonderfully EVIL,
the crew and actors are all well done, as are villagers and denizens of the
swamp. I was really sorry Dragoneyes got killed, he was an excellent exemplar of
quite-but-not-so-really-evil-minion species (my favorite character, another one
was the main male actor, whats-his-name). Some of the magic was done very well,
especially the "magic of blood and bones". I really loved the plot turn when
Larissa denies that hippie treehugging bullshit in favor of Misroi's magick of
Death.
The Bad. There is a problem with two characters. The first is the captain,
Dumont or whats-his-name. For the first third of the book, m(r)s Golden does her
hardest to show how false and hypocritic his friendliness is. For the second,
she attempts to show how truly evil he is, as to make Lond and Misroi blow up
with envy. And for the third, she desperately tries to tell that he is not
hopeless, after all, may be redeemed and forgiven, and does her best trying to
make us sympathize his bitter end. Not really fruitful after trying to convince
the readers he is a vileness incarnate for the first two thirds. The second
troublesome character is Misroi. I agree with one of previous reviewers - for a
damned Darklord, he is just too happy and content. I like that character very
much, but he simply doesn't look like a darklord, Lond or Dumont would make a
much more fitting one.
The Ugly. Too much magic. No, TOO MUCH magic. At times, DotD doesn't even look
like fantasy, but like a kiddie fairytale. Ditto with loahs and the whole
talking animals stuff - maybe for the native cultures filled with such mythos
(i.e. indian, african) it reads natural, but for the european me it looks like a
Disney's cartoon. Overpresense of evil magic is good, but that hippie
magic...ugh. The mass combat in the end is a real cliche of "epic climax" :( And
the ending is, well, too light and happy (as is whole book, while we are on
that..), despite the lover's death. I think Dark Powers would prefer to leave
Larissa battered and alone in the middle of the swamp, surrounded by
Dance-watched corpses of everybody from the ship. Compare it to the ending of
Heart of Midnight, which in essense has a same level of melodramatism..
Still, despite the drawbacks, it is worth more than 3 drops. It may be not the
best Ravenloft novel, but it is JUST a very good novel. 4 drops.

Heart of Midnight was from 4th to 6th Ravenloft novel I've read (the first three
were I, Strahd; Dance of the Dead and Carnival of Fear, and then after a while I
picked up VotM, KotBR and HoM about in same time). But it was a first that truly
revealed to me what Ravenloft is about. A dark tale of revenge, of corruption,
of love that goes beyond melodrama and beyond tragedy into the realm of sheer
bleakness and utter hopelessness. It wasn't a love from first sight, but after a
two or three reading I realized mr King's work is nothing short of amazing.
Most of the Ravenloft novels are dedicated to one single mood that gathers and
tenses through the whole book. It is action in KotBR and Shadowborn, melodrama
in VotM and Dance of Dead, fear in TSWE and Carnival of Fear, drama and tragedy
in IS, IS2 and Lord of Necropolis. This single mood of HoM is bleakness. Heart
of Midnight is probably an ultimate suicidal novel, dripping with black
melancholy. From the beginning to an end, it displays how the "good" is getting
corrupted, how the high ideals are crushed and desecrated, how the existence
truly loses -any- meaning whatsoever. This is what Ravenloft is for me - a world
devoid of hope, happiness and peace, where everything and everybody are touched
and tainted by evil, and every rare and occasional joy is always a prelude for a
horrible and merciless tragedy. No other novel captured that spirit of the
setting as Heart of Midnight did. "A world out of light, death at the end",
quoting Dead of MAYHEM..
I didn't really liked the first half of the book. Child/teenage protagonists
always bore me to no end. Casimir as a new meistersinger was even worse - being
an elitist/hierarchist pig I am, I absolutely HATE these
equalidat-fraternidat-blahblahblahdat protocommie characters who crawl in the
mud helping the "poor workers" and scowl at "bad evil aristocrats who dare to
think they are better than the rest". So I welcomed his corruption by Harkon and
his own bestial nature, and I welcomed his final demise. The scene when the
filthy ignorant mob he was so fond of hunted him for being a monster pleased me
especially - there is high justice, after all. The love story hints too much at
"beauty and the beast", but the dark twist at the end made it all the more
enjoyable. As a background source, HoM is also incredibly useful - I use it
while DMing Feast of Goblyns now, and I'll dare to say between Heart of Midnight
and Feast of Goblyns Kartakass is a most well-developed and detailed domain up
to date.
Most of the characters are interesting at the least. Younger Casimir, as I said,
sucked, but at the end, Casimir fighting the battle against the beast in himself
(and gradually LOSING it!) was nothing short of brilliant. His decision to turn
on Harkon, while could seem to some as a "good act" (yeah, the good people are
those people who kill evil people, right? heh-heh..), seems to me as another
large step on his road into the abyss. Harkon played evil tricks, but the end
scenes show him as more human than a monster Casimir became (the latter's corpse
turning human, IMO, is a very artificial scene). Juliana is an example of Tragic
Hero's Beloved done right (although she doesn't act much...which probably is the
whole point :). The original meistersinger is BRUTAL. Harkon...well, Harkon is
Harkon. Although I didn't found real motivations in him (then again, what
motivations could exist for a being which is animal in essense?), he was an
excellent Darklord. A pity Akriel didn't had a role, but I guess her Feast of
Goblyns tricks made her a bad service :) And, of course, Toris is probably the
real protagonist, a helpless commoner caught between a wolfwere too humane and
his advancing beast inner self. It is he who moves Heart of Midnight beyond the
trivial high tragedy into the bleak and hopeless agony. His suicide in epilogue
is absolutely amazing scene that could make many a reader consider the same
doing for days..
5 drops. A masterpiece of bleakness, agony and depression. === Cut ===

I won't be as longwinded here, because this was my only Ravenloft novel I didn't
kept. I bought it, read it twice in half a year, and then left in suburban house
where it happily resides for almost 5 years since. I don't remember much of its
contents anymore. But I remember very well I didn't liked it. At all.
I am not the action type guy, so my complains are not the lack of plot and
events (I -did- liked TSWE and hated Shadowborn). Nor I am that much pro-fantasy
and anti-gothic to dislike CoF simply because there are no sword-wielding
fighters and terrible lurking undead villains. I won't even claim it was boring
(it certainly was for me). But the main idea of the book, as one of reviewers
correctly noted, is just exploration (exploitation?) of human psychology -
rather, "politically incorrect" human traits. Behind near nonexistant plot and
somewhat scary (nothing next to TSWE) and somewhat depressing (nothing next to
Heart of Midnight) mood, this book just screams "Prejudice is bad! Racism is
evil! 'Freaks' are also people and must be treated so!", and does nothing else
AT ALL. Well, excuse me, call me a nazi or fascist, but I could care less about
the whole Carnival issue. For me, freaks are freaks, must be treated as freaks,
and whatever is their freaking business does not concern me in the least.
Whoever kills them - more power to him. The only emotion I had throughout the
whole novel was mild scorn towards all protagonists and mild annoyance at
author's desperate attempts to make me feel something else. I bought it because
it was a Ravenloft novel, and I've reread it once assuming I could have missed
something that was good (which, I previously assumed, must be contained in every
Ravenloft novel), and was disappointed a lot. After HoM, IMO it was King's MAJOR
failure.
1 drop. The least I need in Ravenloft (or any RPG, by that matter) is a
modern-world propaganda, especially of ideals alien to me.

While some of the short stories in the anthology aren't that good, overall it
impressed me more than the most novels. The highlights of collection pack the
same punch of horror as better novels in much smaller format. Worst stories,
well, can be just skipped on rereadings.
David Wise "The Crucible of Dr. Rudolph Van Richten" - Good! Being a passionate
hater of the "vampire hunter" archetype, I always thought of Van Richten and his
ilk with disgust and fury. However, this very short story on how he stepped on
this hated path is very good. The "good" doctor is portrayed neither as some
holier-than-thou hero for the good of all like sasha of VotM infamy, nor as an
obsessed maniacal serial killer like van helsing of Dracula. Just a horrified,
hysterical and desperate father trying to save his son. Well, mind you, he is
not yet a vampire hunter. The ending is especially brilliant, as, confronting
the vistani who kidnapped Erasmus, he trades son for son, hate for hate and evil
for evil. This prologue shown me that good doctor DOES have a dark side, and a
very beautiful one. My respect towards him rose many points upward (from the
absolute bottom, mind you).
Chet Williamson "The Vanished Ones" - Bad! Extremely generic story, so
predictable it wasn't even funny. The ONLY thing that mildly surprised me was
that a pretty woman dragunov met ended up being not a vampiress, but some
different monster. The protagonist with his petty excuses of thinking (which
goes along the lines, "how am I supposed to Fight Evil(TM) now when I myself
became an Evil Monster(TM)?") is a laughing stock. One of the worst stories in
the book. Maybe THE worst.
Mark Anthony "The House of a Hundred Windows" - Good! Even very good. This short
story reminded me a lot of TSWE, except that a heroine now does have some (and
not a little) willpower. The beginning is mysterious and subtly oppressive, the
main character is arguably the best female character I encountered in Ravenloft
fiction, and the end, while featuring too much of a "high fantasy" flair, is
surprising and VERY satisfying. In a boredom of a forlorn estate, caught in the
tenets of pre-suffrage customs, Clarisse retains enough will and wit in the
numbing environment to emerge triumphant, her own only mistress. Hmm, I'd love
to meet that girl ;)
Elaine Cunningham "Song Snatcher" - Weird. It would be a decent story if only
its first half would be present. Taken complete, however, it doesn't look like a
story at all. More like a short module or an NPC entry. The main character, a
nice bard visiting Kartakass, acts like a good guy for the first half of a
module, and in the second "ponders" over his true agenda, sinister and insane.
The problem is - although it is written in third person, Larson not only talks
and acts, but also thinks...and then it is "revealed" that all he was thinking
was fake. Hmm, whom he was trying to fool? As he is hardly aware somebody is
reading about him, the only option is - himself. Thinking nice for a half of a
story, and then explaining to himself what really an evil guy he is...absurd.
Great ideas, but absolutely horrid and plain un-literary execution. This "story"
should better have been published in the 2nd MC Appendix.
James M. Ward "Undefiled" - Decent. A boring and generic "adventure transcript"
plot, but with amazing twist in the very end. Basically, the whole excuse for a
plot was just a tool to make the ending all the more shocking, revealing horror
from under the deceitful illusion of peace, goodness and serenity. Just what is
coraltan? I'd like to use such creature..
Roger E. Moore "The Briar at the Window" - Decent. Pretty much the same - while
it is not an adventure transcript, instead, nothing just happens until the gory,
grim end. Ghosts must have a really boring life, I guess (which makes sense). At
least we now know in all the shocking details what Godefroy's curse is. But I
have some prejudice against stories whose only purpose is to be a filler or
explanation for the ending scene, no matter how great the latter is.
Allen C. Kupfer "Nocturne" - Decent. Another old story in the new wrapping - the
ratcatcher Piper from medieval legends offers to clean...not something, but
Richemulot. Good story, but with very predictable end.
Kate Novak "The Wailing" - Decent. Hmm, what my favorite Realms author (three
cheers for Alias!) does in Ravenloft? Telling a tale about Tristessa and a young
George Weathermay. Not bad, but not really exciting. The characters are done
very well - Tristessa CAN be conversed with and convinced in something, and
George is not a maniacal holier-than-thou subpaladin I always imagined him to be
(well, he is young here..)
Gene DeWeese "Von Kharkov" - Average. He who brought Azalin in full (un)life now
writes a short story about...guess whom? Our messed vampiric werepanther is
caught in the moment after his escape into the mists - and Valachan. Basically,
he just tries to control that freedom he finally gained only to discover the
true secrets of his past that always were hidden from him. Nothing spectacular.
D. J. Heinrich "Sight and Sound" - Evil! Some prefer Ravenloft to be a place of
peace and normal life which suddenly shows horror underneath. I prefer it a
place of horror and depression which suddenly shows brutality and carnage when
the melancholy becomes too droning and used to. This story is an example of such
carnage. Extremely brutal and disturbing at the end. I almost hear them
screaming...
Jeff Grubb "The Judgment of abd-al-Mamat" - Average. The second co-creator of
Alias and a story the majority of reviewers seem to be most excited about. Not
me, however. It is not bad, but it once again just doesn't seem literary. Too
dry for fiction. It would be great as a domain (lord) description in campaign
setting, but as a reading, it hardly has a plot or a mood - just cold facts and
events listed. It suffers from a very unfinished ending, too (yes, I know that
was an intent - but I believe having a period in the end would help this piece
of not-quite-fiction).
James Lowder "The Rigor of the Game" - Good! Another excellent story. Two profy
gamblers try their hardest to cheat each other on many levels, but Lord Soth
once again shows that a revolver beats flash-royale ;-)
Juanita Coulson "Cold, Hard Silver" - Decent. A story about a conquest-hungry
wretch of a commander (who happened to find an artifact sword) and very touching
ghost, whose part is really beautiful and sad. The commander in question would
make Drakov proud for his own intelligence in comparison - such an idiot
breaking every rule from "Evil Overlord List" is not even funny. I was glad to
see him gone - I, for one, don't need another darklord moron :)
J. Robert King "Objets d'Art" - Good! Weird, haunting and grim story about a
Darkonite professor searching for the secret of immortality in the domain of
Marquis D'Polagno.
Nick Pollota "The Freak" - Bad. Didn't liked it at all. Although the apparent
reasoning of the Headless Horseman as appears in the end of the story is
twisted, for the most part the story is about "a poor freak whom bad, evil
people abuse, finds a Big Brother who can teach them to treat poor freak as a
real human he is". Basically, "Carnival of Fear" (which I despised) made more
diabolic and more obviously moralistic in the same time. Ending helps, but only
a little bit.
Elaine Bergstrom "The Weaver's Pride" - Decent. A prequel to "Tapestry of Dark
Souls"? If ToDS is half as good as this one, it might be worth reading, after
all. A -chilling- story of obsession.
William W. Connors "The Glass Man" - Average. A tale of a thief stealing from
Hazlik with a surprising, but way too materialistic ending. That's why I dislike
the more modernized (post-medieval) approaches to Ravenloft and the whole MotRD
- they are too -rational-, their very style disrupts the mysticism.
Andria Cardarelle "Dark Tryst" - Average. A variant of To Sleep With Evil,
nothing different at all. Very sensual, very vistani-oriented, and featuring a
main heroine with a lot of bursting emotions, total abscence of willpower as an
entity, and probably of brain as well. Quite grim, but such characters make me
ashamed I belong to the same biological species as they.
P. N. Elrod "Caretaker" - Average. Ahh, my favorite Ravenloft author, my
favorite Ravenloft character and my favorite Ravenloft theme - something about
Strahd told by Strahd himself. Well... the story pretty much sucked. It would be
a good addition to either of "I, Strahd" volumes (as they are pretty much the
collections of chronologically-listed loosely tied short stories anyway), but as
a stand-alone story, it is near worthless. It will tell nothing about Strahd to
those who haven't read Elrod's novels, and will tell nothing new to those who
have. Just another Strahd's hunt on lawbreakers, not different from the two such
scenes in first IS. As a side note, I thought a 15th level mage SHOULD know the
range for delayed blast fireball, don't you think, Pat?
Overall - some bad, some very good, many average, but still 5 drops. === Cut ===

Uhh...hard. Basically, the majority of opinions seem to be split on two things.
First, a great novel. Second, completely redefines/denies the core events of
Ravenloft and reveals the nature of Dark Powers. Or so it seems...
I might be in minority here, but I have no problem with either of the troubles
mentioned. Partly because I am a Ravenloft reader, first, and DM only second.
Partly because I am amazed on how certain novels (this one, and I, Strahd) dealt
with the core events in question (formation of Barovia, GC, GH), and the
respective modules/"canon versions" absolutely disgusted me (I hated FtS and
Roots of Evil, and while I haven't seen Grim Harvest, I haven't heard anything
positive about it either). A pity "Lord of Necropolis" was officially ruled
non-canon (right?), but oh well, then I once again just will have to make a
canon of my own, because I am going to stick to the novels' way of things even
if I'll have to rewrite Grand Conjunction from scratch for my campaign. As for
the revealed nature of Dark Powers...come on, didn't they already demonstrated
themselves more manipulative and deceitful than all inhabitants of Lower Planes
taken together, even in this very novel?! I think ole Azzy just has to wake up
from a strange dream he experienced after ascending to demilichdom, that's all
about the "reveal" of Dark Powers ;-)
Now, to the book. Azalin is amazing - I never cared about him and never knew
much (never seen KotD *sigh*) about him, and IS2 made me quite biased against
him, but LotN shown him as a truly amazing darklord. Would never imagine it
after IS2, but now Azzy became my second favorite DL after, of course, Strahd. I
really like to read of events from Darklords' points of view - what the wretched
ignorant mob they are damned to govern considers evil, opressive and tyrannical,
ends up being harsh and tough, but just decisions they simply HAVE to make for
the good of the state. To criticize a ruler for one's own miserable life is one
thing (especially if nobody but a critic in question is responsible for his poor
state), to have to look after the whole state and thousands of subjects quite
another... While Azalin's strange softness towards Balinor (sp) and the second
younger guy (I don't have the book any longer - had to return it to the owner -
so I don't remember names) IMO is unnecessary, it certainly adds another layer
of depth. And the fact that he tries to resurrect his own son gives him a MUCH
better motivation for escape attempts than the original "curse" of being unable
to learn new magic (dunno about him, but if I were him, I could care less). Big
kudos to Gene for making a truly deep, interesting and close personality out of
something that usually only stands for "a big bad evil nastie that awaits on the
bottom of treasure-ridden maze".
I liked how old Barovia visit was handled. Mr DeWeese seemed to read "I, Strahd"
very carefully and managed to stay true to the authentic story (yes, IMO that is
-authentic- story) despite such a potentially all-breaking factor as an
intervention from the future. Further yet, his attempt with Alec Gwylim actually
-added- to "I, Strahd", because originally Alec's willingness to fight against
Strahd always stroke me as very strange - now, since he was controlled by
Azalin, it explains everything. With the rest of Grand Conjunction, however, it
could be done better. IMO, erasing everything from people's memories is a very
weak move, pure deus ex machina (or, as we usually say, "white piano in the
bushes") that shown author's unability to handle the events a reasonable way.
Yeah, Dark Powers are allpowerful and can play with anybody's memories, but a
white piano nonetheless. Then again, maybe the "canon" adventures are but false
memories instilled by Dark Powers after the events settled? Solution :)
Overall, I found the novel excellent. 5 drops and to hell with canons and ===

Good one. This book offers very little in terms of plot and action, but it just
doesn't need them. Brooding fear, a macabre feeling of approaching doom in a
form of an ancient curse - that's what makes the novel. Basically, the only
"plot" there is/could be, is what exact dark secrets Lord Donskoy has and how
soon Marguerite will discover them.
Mood - great. I agree this is a mature and MOST gothic RL novel up to date. A
desperate run from what is perceived as certain doom into what is unknown but
already disturbing. A lone, crumbling castle, less than half a dozen of weird
freaks being the only available populace. A future husband obviously insane from
the beginning, controlling and oppressive. The more the novel progresses, the
more sinister Marguerite discovers her surroundings to be, and the more violent
these surroundings become to her. Disturbing really, I am certain that the
events mutilated the girl's psyche for life.
Characters... My main complain is Marguerite herself. By some strange reason I,
despite being a sexist male chauvinistic pig all right, can't stand such meek,
pathetic, spineless, blatantly "feminine" females. Oh, well, perhaps I just
can't stand reading about meek and spineless main characters irrelevant of their
sex. Marguerite is a just a cow at slaughterhouse (the sheep would be a more
correct comparison, but sheep aren't slaughtered as commonly). She has NO
strength of will whatsoever, very little brains to back it up, and is so scared
and obedient she will easily break any rules her frightening husband set up if
only someone else will order her to. It is scary really to read of someone as
cowering and easy to bend and twist, especially if it's a main character (in
whose hide, after all, the reader is supposed to put him/herself). Worse yet,
she compensates the lack of intelligence and abscence of willpower with
overabundance of emotions, which makes her all so easier to manipulate and
abuse. She is just a reap womb for her husband, just a reap womb for his
arch-nemesis, just their lord's reap womb for everyone else - and she accepts it
as normal. Horrid. I'd take being courted by a Kargat vampire(ss) over that any
day.
Lord Donskoy, theoretically, is great character, if not overdone as "villain".
The introduction with him is veeeery evil, and during the course of the book, he
shows himself as a real monster. Personally for me, however, all his evilness
was very amusing. You see, -my- reallife name happens to be Donskoy (I swear!)
So I couldn't stop giggling reading about his vile acts and desciptions of his
evilness, heh-heh..
Jacqueline Montarri, of course, is a highlight of the book. I haven't read the
original "Wizard of Oz", so the idea of a girl stealing others' heads and
attaching them to her own neck was very intriguing and fresh for me. Her vanity
about these heads and a lust to collect more reminds me of many women running
around obsessed with their lipsticks and mascara...really amusing :) In other
hand, she uses them -very- interesting way in that scene Marguerite eavesdrops
through a crack in the wall, tee-hee-hee..
The "other side" didn't impressed me. The vistani stranger was just another
bender of Marguerite's soft clay spine, and the outcome of the curse haven't
horrified me at all. Zosia was good, though.
Overall - great mood, weak plot, great NPCs, disgusting main character, and ===

Если процесс передачи пяти баксов на станции "Краснопресненская" нищему

спросить: "А как насчет того, чтобы помочь этому человеку найти работу?" Это

Прочтите другие произведения Фрая, например "Мой Рагнарек" (вот где практически
закончились кулинарные изыски авторов!). Там будет трудновато уличить Макса в
избыточной "доброте", особенно в сцене, когда он схватился с богами
древних индейцев под музыку "Куин". Или его превращение в аналог Анубиса
в "Разговорчивом мертвеце". В этом эпизоде Джуффин признался, что ему
понравилось это существо за то, что оно "грубое, немилосердное, веселое"
... И если сами авторы эпопеи с сэром Халли не согласны, то я готов съесть свою
скабу. ;))

Прочти другие произведения Фрая, например "Мой Рагнарек" (вот где практически
закончились кулинарные изыски авторов!:)). Там будет трудновато уличить Макса в
избыточной "доброте", особенно в сцене, когда он схватился с богами
древних индейцев. Или его превращение в аналог Анубиса в "Разговорчивом
мертвеце". В этом эпизоде Джуффин признался, что ему понравилось это существо
за то, что оно "грубое, немилосердное, веселое".
... И если сами авторы эпопеи с сэром Халли не согласны, то я готов съесть свою
скабу. ;))

Понятно. Это я на автомате привела цитату из "Властелина колец". А во вpемя,
описанное в "Сильмариллионе" - действительно, были вастаки.
Но в сущности ответ на вопрос получен. Люди служили Сауpону/Моpготу из-за
посеянного в их душах зла. Спасибо за pазъяснения.
