приходится ;) я, например, не читаю "женские романы" и боевики вроде БЕШЕННОГО
тоже.
Hадеяться что среди этой тонны мусора найдется один роман с глубоким
содержанием. Проще исключить данную литературу из своего поля зрения и не
портить себе нервы.

Я не считаю книги Крапивина ни плохими ни хорошими. Я их не смог
прочитать, непошло. Не моё.
Многие считают Достоевского "рулез форева" :) А мне ненравиться.
Соответственно, моё неприятие того или иного автора, ничего не говорит
об авторе, только о моём "извращеном" вкусе :)

Тоже самое плюс Лукьяненко:))
Имея ввиду 10-15 книг за 2 года я имел ввиду не какие-то сверхшедевры, а то, что
можно назвать хорошим уpовнем.

сдается мне, что в фантастике процент мусора не меньше, просто любители эхотага
боле-мене прилично в нем оpиентиpуются и могут выбирать что-то подходящее.

Один мой хороший друг лет 10 назад после окончания универа работал учителем
русского языка и литературы. Базовую школьную программу он отмел начисто.
Фактически он преподавал русский язык и фантастику ;-)). И насаждал Стругацких в
том числе. Так вот, ни один самый оторви-выбрось двоечник не получал ниже 4. Им
было ИHТЕРЕСHО.

либо у тебя планка хорошести задрана слишком высоко, либо мы по разному
считаем ;)
хороших книг (то что я не пожалел прочитав) я насчитываю гдето 50 в год
еще половину от этого числа я неодобрил, за другие не брался по совету знакомых,
друзей итд.

Hi there, All!
Вот прочел - некая японская компания начала выпуск порошка, в который окунают
кончик сигареты. При прикуривании порошок превращается в маслянистую жидкость,
снижающую содержание всяких вредных смол на 80%, а никотин превращающую в
никотиновую кислоту (витамин В). Как это сказывается на вкусе сигарет, не
сказано, но - этот Громов опять угадал! Помните "Год лемминга" - там
предписывалось курить, сыну героя, в частности? Лечебно-профилактические?..
А еще в "Энциклопедии символов" я прочел, что муха, причем именно золотая, в
Древнем Египте служила наградой воинам за храбрость... Привет Буркину и
Лукьяненко; я точно знаю, им об этой египетской "Мухе за отвагу" известно не
было...

STAR WARS: THE NEW JEDI ORDER
In October 1999, Del Rey Books will launch a new series of Star Wars
fiction: The New Jedi Order, beginning with VECTOR PRIME by R. A. Salvatore
and taking place after the events of the various Bantam books--some
twenty-one years after the Battle of Endor and the defeat of the Emperor in
Return of the Jedi. Five hardcovers--one a year--will cover the pivotal
events in a huge new story arc. Mass market paperback original novels will
fill in and flesh out the tale--there are so many characters, so many
worlds to explore, that although the hardcovers alone will tell the main
story, all thirty-odd books over five years will build up to an epic that
is truly galactic in scale. This new legend will star both familiar and
unfamiliar characters--starting, of course, with Luke, Leia, and Han.
Luke's wife Mara Jade will be on hand, and Han and Leia's teenage children
will play increasingly important roles. New characters will be introduced
as well, as the New Republic and, indeed, the entire Star Wars galaxy come
under threat from a new and unexpected--and terrifyingly deadly--enemy.
The first mass market trilogy, to be published in early 2000, will be DARK
TIDE (ONSLAUGHT, SEIGE, AND RUIN), by Michael A. Stackpole. This will be
followed by a duology by James Luceno, former writing partner of the late
Star Wars author Brian Daley; a hardcover novel by Kathy Tyers, to be
published in the fall of 2000; and a mass market trilogy by Michael Jan
Friedman.
While still maintaining consistency with what has gone before, The New Jedi
Order will include some real surprises. A portion of the text of VECTOR
PRIME, expressing Han Solo's thoughts, sums it up: "They had been living on
the very edge of disaster for so very long, fighting battles, literally,
for decades, running from bounty hunters and assassins. Even the first time
Han and Leia had met, on the Death Star, of all places, and in the gallows
of the place, to boot! So many times, it seemed, one or more of them should
have died. "And yet, in a strange way, that close flirting with death had
only made Han think them all the more invulnerable. They could dodge any
blaster, or piggy-back on the side of an asteroid, or climb out a garbage
chute, or . . . "But not anymore. Not now. The bubble of security was gone.
"To Han Solo, the galaxy suddenly seemed a more dangerous place by far."

WORKS IN PROGRESS: Changes, Additions, Updates

STEPHEN BAXTER's new novel, MANIFOLD: TIME, will be out in January 2000. He
is hard at work on MANIFOLD: SPACE.
GREG BEAR is working fast and furious on an original STAR WARS: EPISODE I
novel, set three years after the events of THE PHANTOM MENACE and
furthering the adventures of the young Obi-Wan Kenobi and his new
apprentice, Anakin Skywalker.
ALICE BORCHARDT is well into book three of what we're calling the Legends
of the Wolves.
RAY BRADBURY is currently working on the screenplay for FAHRENHEIT 451
which will be produced by Mel Gibson's Icon Productions in conjunction with
Warner Bros.
TERRY BROOKS's contemporary fantasy series continues with ANGEL FIRE EAST,

Matthew Woodring Stover, author of HEROES DIE, talks about heroes.
For me, this all started when I was five or six years old: the first time I
watched Kato kick the crap out of one of the Green Hornet's enemies.
Even that young, I could see that there was something different about this
guy. I'd already seen Adam West BASH and ker-POW people with his
Bat-gloves, I'd seen Fess Parker thump Redcoats and the occasional
intolerant rancher, I'd watched George Reeves bend guns in half and
witnessed William Shatner demonstrate twenty-third century space karate on
belligerent aliens.
This guy who played Kato, though--he was a whole different animal. He could
do things with his hands and feet that made my hair stand on end. He wasn't
some paunchy actor who'd done a couple of weeks of Ed Parker karate so he
could fake being able to fight.
He was real.
For those of you too young to remember, his name was Bruce Lee.
Kato was the coolest thing on two legs. I've never wanted anything in my
life as much as I wanted to be him. In our make-believe games when I was a
kid, I always let everyone else be Zorro, Batman, Superman, the Green
Hornet, or the Lone Ranger.
They could be whoever they wanted, so long as I got to be Kato.
Kato didn't need a sword or a gun, a laser cane, a utility belt, or alien
superpowers. All he needed was to get within arm's reach; then all your
guns and knives and swords and superpowers wouldn't do you any damn good at
all--and he knew it.
You could see it in his eyes.
That's why I wanted to be him.
I've been in the martial arts (off and on) for more than twenty years.
Along the way, it occurred to me: What if I could be Kato, after all? Not
just a good fighter--not just a great fighter, not even Bruce Lee--but
Kato. Even after twenty years, I have never come close to that level of
skill; but what if I could just walk into a store . . . and pay for it?
Isn't that part of what draws us to this kind of entertainment? So we can
identify with heroes who can do things that are far beyond our reach? So we
can imagine being as strong as the Hulk, or as agile as Tarzan, or as
lethal as the Man with No Name?
What if you could lay down some cash and become that kind of hero? What if
you could step inside his head: see what he sees, feel what he feels? What
if you could know, really know, how it feels to have his look in your eye?
Would you pay for that?
If you would, come meet Caine.
He's not Kato. He's a different kind of hero---he's a product of a colder,
harder world than the American sixties. He's played by an actor, but what
he does isn't an act.
It's for real.
Real fighting--as real as I could make it.
Real blood.
Real death.
And people who pay a lot of money to experience all this along with him, in
real time.
That's why Caine's a different kind of hero. Because he knows better than
anyone: in real life, heroes die.

published since 1977, make their choices for the best of the previous
year, in a variety of categories. The Asimov's Science Fiction Annual
Readers' Poll Awards are usually presented by a representative of Dell
Magazine during the SFWA's Nebula Banquet weekend.
3. AsimovU [1994 - Present] - The Isaac Asimov Award for Undergraduate
Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy is co-sponsered by Asimov's
Science Fiction magazine and the International Association for the
Fantastic in the Arts. Full-time undergraduate students attending any
accredited university of college are eligible. The winners are
selected by jury, and the prizes are presented at the annual
Conference on the Fantastic.
4. Aurealis [1995 - Present] - The Aurealis Award is presented by
Chimaera Publications for excellence in Australian Speculative Fiction
as determined by a panel of judges for works published in the previous
year.
5. Aurora [1982 - Present] - The Aurora Award (known as the Casper prior
to 1991), is presented by the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy
Association to the best SF works written by Canadians in the previous
year. The award is very similar to the Hugo with respect to categories
and voting procedures.
6. Balrog [1979 - 1985] - The short lived Coveted Balrog Award was
presented by the International Fantasy Gamers Society to the best in a
variety of predominantly fantasy categories.
7. BFA [1972 - Present] - The British Fantasy Awards are presented
annually by the British Fantasy Society (formed in 1971), usually at
FantasyCon (1975 - present), to the best fantasy of the year. The
award was established in memory of August Derleth and the the novel
category is still often referred to as the August Derleth Award. The
membership of the British Fantasy Society, and attendees to the annual
FantasyCon, are eligible to vote for the British Fantasy Awards. The
Awards are awarded on a simple majority vote system.
8. BSFA [1966 - Present] - The British Science Fiction Awards are
presented annually by the British Science Fiction Association (formed
in 1958), usually at EasterCon. This award started as the British
Fantasy Award in 1966 and became the British Science Fiction Award in
1970.
9. Campbell [1973 - Present] - The John W. Campbell Jr. Memorial Award is
awarded to the best SF novel published in English in the previous
year, by the University of Kansas' Center for the Study of Science
Fiction, at the annual Campbell Conference. This award should not be
confused with the John W. Campbell Award (JWCA) for best new writer
(although it often is), which is traditionally handed out at the Hugo
award ceremony. The winner is selected by a jury comprised of critics
and SF writers. This award is presented in conjunction with the
Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award, and since 1996, the Hall of Fame
Award
10. Clarke [1987 - Present] - The Arthur C. Clarke Award is awarded to the
best SF novel published in the UK in the previous year. The
publication must be a UK first edition. The winner is chosen by a
jury of six, consisting of two members from each of the following
organizations: The Science Fiction Foundation, the British Science
Fiction Association, and the International Science Policy Foundation.
11. ComptonCrook [1983 - Present] - The Compton Crook Award is voted upon,
and given by, the Baltimore Science Fiction Society (BSFS) at the
annual Balticon, for the best first novel of science fiction published
during the previous year. The name honors the memory of the late SF
writer Compton Newby Crook (1908 - 1981), who wrote under the name
Stephen Tall.
12. Deathrealm [1995 - 1996] - The readers of Deathrealm (published from
1987 to 1997) made their choices for the best of the previous year, in
a variety of categories. The Deathrealm Awards were presented annually
during the World Horror Convention. (The nominations were never made
public and never will be as they have been discarded).
13. Ditmar [ 1969 - present] - The Australian Science Fiction Awards
(Ditmars) were created in 1969 by the committee of that year's
Australian National Science Fiction Convention. The award was named
after Martin James (Ditmar) Jenssen, a founding member of the
Melbourne Science Fiction Club, who financially supported the award
until about 1975. The awards are given out at the Australian National
Science Fiction Convention. While nominations are open to fandom in
general, only members of the national convention may vote for the
award.
14. Gandalf [ 1974 - 1981] - The Gandalf Award was an award which was
administered by the Worldcon Committee and determined by the Hugo
nomination and voting mechanism. It was sponsored by Lin Carter and
S.A.G.A (The Swordsmen and Sorcerers Guild of America, Ltd.). The
Gandalf Grand Master Award was presented in all years, while the
Gandalf Book-Length Fantasy Award was presented only in 1978 and 1979.
15. Gaughan [1986 - present] - The Jack Gaughan Award for Best Emerging
Artist is awarded at the annual Boskone convention by the New England
Science Fiction Association (NESFA) to an artist who has become an SF
professional in the past five years. The award is chosen by a panel of
three judges. The name honors the memory of the late SF artist Jack
Gaughan (1930 - 1985).
16. HOMer [1990 - Present] - The HOMer Awards were founded in 1991 by Jim
Schneider, one of the system operators of the Science Fiction and
Fantasy Literature Forum on the CompuServe Information Service. The
award's name recalls both the ancient Greek epic poet and the
CompuServe code-page for this forum, HOM-9. All members of the SF&F
Forum are eligible to nominate for, and vote on the final ballot, for
the awards.
17. Hugo [1954 - Present] - The Science Fiction Achievement Award,
commonly called the Hugo (after Hugo Gernsback), is awarded in a
variety of categories at the annual World SF Convention (WorldCon) by
the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS), which is usually held over
the Labor Day weekend. The awards are voted upon by fans holding
membership in either the current or preceding WorldCon.

18. IFA [1951 - 1957, excluding 1956] - The International Fantasy Awards
were created by four British enthusiasts, including John Beynon Harris
(John Wyndham), and first presented at the 1951 British Science
Fiction Convention. The IFAs were presented to the author(s) of the
best speculative fiction book of the year, with a second category for
the best nonfiction book related to the genre. The nonfiction class
was dropped after 1953. Winners were selected by a panel of prominent
personalities, with the panel going international after 1951. Once the
Hugos had been successfully launched, some of the raison d'etre for
the IFAs was gone. The last IFA was presented at the London Worldcon
in 1957.
19. IHG [ 1995 - present] - The International Horror Guild (formerly known
as the International Horror Critics Guild), presents annual awards, in
a variety of categories, to recognize the achievements of those who
toil in the Horror/Dark Fantasy field. Nominations can be submitted by
anyone via e-mail.
20. Imaginaire [ 1992 - present] - le Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire est

21. JWCA [1973 - Present] - The John W. Campbell Award is awarded to the
best new SF writer of the year. It is administered by the Worldcon
Committee, determined by the Hugo nomination and voting mechanism, and
presented at the annual World SF Convention (WorldCon) during the Hugo
ceremony by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). Sponsored by
Conde-Nast, publishers of Analog, the award was created in 1972 as a
tribute to John W. Campbell Jr, its celebrated editor, who died in
1971. Over the years, sponsorhip changed hands as Analog was sold to
Davis Publications in 1979, then to Dell Magazines in 1993 and finally
to Penny Press in 1996. It is no longer considered part of the Hugo
Awards.
22. Lambda [1989 - Present] - The Lambda Literary Award has been awarded
annually, since 1989, by the Lambda Book Report to recognize
excellence in gay and lesbian writing and publishing in the U.S.during
the preceding year. The awards are given in numerous categories but
only the speculative fiction categories have been included here.
Final nominees are announced by the Lambda Book Report staff, and the
final voting is done by a small group of volunteer judges in each
category.
23. Locus Poll [1971 - Present] - Locus Magazine conducts an annual
readership poll, with the results published in the August issue. The
poll is valuable in helping to construct reading lists, since as many
as 2 dozens books may appear in each of the final ordinal lists. Since
the Locus readership consists of professional writers, would-be
writers, and hard-core fans, it presents an interesting middle ground
between the Hugo (fan-voted) and the Nebula (writer-voted) awards.
24. Mythopoeic [1971-Present] - The Mythopoeic Awards are chosen each year
by committees composed of volunteer Mythopoeic Society members, and
presented at the annual Mythcon (there was only one award for each of
1975, 1976 and 1981, and no awards between 1977 - 1980). The Society
is a non-profit organization devoted to the study, discussion and
enjoyment of myth and fantasy literature, especially the works of
J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams, known as the
"Inklings".
25. Nebula [1965 - Present] - The Nebula is a writing award given in
several categories (based on length) by the Science Fiction and
Fantasy Writers of America. The awards are voted upon by members of
the SFFWA. This is a peer system, as membership in the SFFWA requires
publication of at least 3 short stories, or 1 full-length book, in a
professional market.
26. PK Dick [1982 - Present] - The Philip K. Dick Award is awarded to the
best science fiction or fantasy work first published in paperback in
the previous year. The award is chosen by a jury of writers and
critics.
27. Prometheus [1979; 1982 - present] - The Libertarian Futurist Society,
presents the annual Prometheus Award for best libertarian SF novel and
the Hall of Fame Award for best classic libertarian SF novel. The
Prometheus Award was created in 1979 by L. Neil Smith to honor
libertarian speculative fiction. It fell into limbo the next year. The
LFS, founded in 1982, revived the award and created The Hall of Fame
Award the same year to honor classic libertarian fiction. The Hall of
Fame Award is open to any work of fiction over five years old. Books
for both awards are nominated by, and the winner chosen, by all
members of the LFS.
28. RetroHugo [1996 - Present] - Retrospective Hugos may be given to works
which could have been nominated at a Worldcon which was held 50, 75,
or 100 years prior to the current Worldcon. Note that the award is
optional, that a Worldcon must have been held in the target year, that
neither Hugos nor Retro Hugos were awarded during that year, and that
the voting rules are precisely the same as the Hugo awards.
29. Rhysling [1978 - present] - An award given by the Science Fiction
Poetry Association, founded by Suzette Haden Elgin. Nominees are
selected by the SFPA in two categories: short poem (less than 50 lines
in length), and long poem.
30. SFBC [1987 - present] - The Book of the Year Award is given, and voted
upon, by members of theScience Fiction Book Club, honoring the Best
Main Selection of the previous year.
31. SF Chronicle [1982 - Present] - The readers of the Science Fiction
Chronicle, published since 1979, make their choices for the Best of
the previous year, in categories which closely parallel those offered
by the World Science Fiction Convention's Hugo Awards. SFC's award
voting is by a weighted voting method, which gives 1st choice 3
points, 2nd 2 and 3rd 1.
32. Sidewise [1995 - Present] - The Sidewise Awards for Alternate History
were conceived in late 1995 to honor the best "genre" publications of
the year. The award takes its name from Murray Leinster's 1934 short
story "Sidewise In Time" Two awards will be given each year: The Long
Form Award (60,000 words or more), and the Short form Award. The
awards are decided by jury.
33. Skylark [1966 - present] - The Edward E. Smith Memorial Award for
Imaginative Fiction (commonly referred to as the Skylark) is awarded
at the annual Boskone convention by the New England Science Fiction
(NESFA) to someone who has contributed significantly to science
fiction. The award is voted on by the NESFA membership. The name
honors the memory of the late SF writer Edward E. "Doc" Smith (1890 -
1965).
34. Stoker [1983 - Present] - The Bram Stoker Awards are given in several
categories (based on length) by the Horror Writers Association.
35. Sturgeon [1987 - Present] The Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for
best science fiction short fiction (under 17,500 words) published in
English in the previous year, by the University of Kansas' Center for
the Study of Science Fiction, at the annual Campbell Conference. The
winner is selected by a jury comprised of critics and SF writers. This
award is presented in conjunction with the John W. Campbell Jr.,
Memorial Award, and since 1996, the Hall of Fame Award.
36. Tiptree [1992 - Present] - The James Tiptree, Jr. Award is awarded
annually to "science fiction or fantasy that explores and expands the
roles of women and men." Wiscon supports a web page devoted to the
award.
37. WFA [1975 - Present] - The World Fantasy Awards (sometimes referred to
as the Howard Awards, after H. (Howard) P. Lovecraft) are presented at
the World Fantasy Convention. Attending and supporting members of the
convention are eligible to nominate potential winners (only living
persons are eligible), however, the final decisions are made by a
panel of judges. The World Fantasy Convention keeps information on
upcoming convention sites and award nominees on their web page.

(Полдень, 22-й век)" - а тексты этих публикаций _весьма_ отличаются. Во-вторых,
ты исказил цитату: "Вот, - говорит, - давеча тушили-тушили одну паршивенькую

Не переживай за поляков. Во-пеpвых, это -- работа Войцеха Кайтоха (он делал ее,
набиpая необходимое коичество публикаций для диссертации), а во-втоpых, все
подобные пометки носят все-таки рекомендательный хаpактеp. На каком-то издании
"Сказок роботов" Лема видел пометку "Для какого-то класса общеобразовательной
школы" (книжку не найду, куда-то заблукала)...

Об АБС-пpемии. Полным списком номинантов я не pасполагаю. Известны лишь так

3. Михаил Успенский. Кого за смертью посылать
4. Василий Щепетнев. Седьмая часть тьмы
Кpитика:
1. Эдуард Гевоpкян. Вежливый отказ...
2. Сергей Переслегин. Пpедисловия и послесловия к с/с "Миры братьев Стругацких"
3. Всеволод Ревич. Перекресток утопий
Этих финалистов определил лично БHС. Затем жюри из 17 человек (Арбитман,
Бабенко, Бережной, Галкина, Гевоpкян, Елисеев, Житинский, Измайлов, Лазарчук,
Логинов, Лукин, Пеpеслегин, Прашкевич, Рыбаков, Успенский, Щеголев, Ютанов)
определило лауpеатов. Ими стали Лукин и Ревич.
На вручении сначала всем финалистам были вручены дипломы и денежка, а потом
лауреатам -- медали и еще денежка.

А к "щ" в помещенных мной списках не цепляйся! Там по храцузски в оригинале, на
этом месте было e' (е с акцентом или как это правильно называется?) Другие буквы
аналгичного начертания тоже поехали. Если это сильно мешает, постараюсь
повторить (буде поступит мылом более 1 просьбы), обговорив, что на что
заменяется.
