Я, когда читаю, стараюсь представить миp. Для этого он должен
быть логичным и непpотивоpечивым. Т.е. кирпичики, из которых он
собран, должны стыковаться друг с дpугом. Иначе получается игра
без правил, и читать становится не интеpесно. Игру без правил может
позволить себе только Шекли. (У него это само становится правилом :)

Значительно обновлены почти все разделы сайта: библиогpафия,
иллюстрации, "Попутный ветер", ссылки.
В разделе "Анонс" приведена пара интересных фактов о
политике издательства "Центрполиграф", которое на прошлой
неделе контрафактно (то есть, по пиратски) выпустило 4-й том
сериала "Слово о драконе" - "КАРАВАН МЕРТВЕЦОВ"
В ближайшее вpемя ожидается дальнейшее пополнение разделов
"Попутный ветер" и "иллюстрации".

Jane Jensen has been both a computer programmer and a computer game
designer, winning accolades for her interactive mystery series Gabriel
Knight. Technology is a second love; her first is the humanities. She has
had an interest in comparative religion and philosophy for many years,

fundamentalist minister's daughter. She wrote MILLENNIUM RISING because in
1994 she bought a book on prophecies and it scared her for weeks. She did
not build a bunker in her backyard, preferring to subscribe to SKEPTICAL
INQUIRER instead, and she and her husband remain resolute residents of
downtown Seattle.
Del Rey: You established yourself as a writer of computer gaming software,
most notably with your character Gabriel Knight, before moving into the
field of book publishing with your first novel, MILLENNIUM RISING. Did your
interest in programming lead to writing fiction, or vice versa?
Jane Jensen: I'd say programming and fiction were more like two separate
interests happily united in the gaming medium. I've wanted to be a writer
since I was a child. I loved books growing up and wrote reams of bad poetry
in high school. But in college I decided to major in computer science
because I liked programming--I'm something of a details person--and an
English degree wasn't exactly a guarantee of financial solvency. I was an
engineer with Hewlett-Packard for six years, but something was missing
creatively. I tried my hand at novel writing in my spare time, but after
one agent turned me down I gave up on fiction. Then I discovered my first
computer adventure game. I'd seen arcade games before and they didn't
interest me much, but this was different--a graphically represented story
(albeit a simple one). I saw the potential to develop more complex stories
where the "reader" had to actually be the character and unfold the story
through their own actions. In early '91 I joined Sierra On-Line and that
eventually led to my own game series--Gabriel Knight.

My experience in the gaming arena has had a huge impact on my writing.
Writing for games is intense--you're expected to plot a full story, write
up to 8,000 lines of dialogue and responses, design puzzles, do doco and
hint books, attend voice-over recording sessions, and finalize your own
spelling and grammar (believe me, mine improved immeasurably!)--all within
a game's yearlong cycle. Needless to say, I became much more focused and
proficient. And the critical success of Gabriel Knight gave me the
confidence to return to my first love--the novel form.
DR: What are "doco" books?
JJ: You know, they're those manuals that come in the box that nobody ever
reads! But sometimes we've done comics or journals that contain the back
story as well.
DR: Are the boundaries between the gaming and book publishing worlds
dissolving as far as writers are concerned?
JJ: Yes and no. You do see a few well-known writers working on gaming
titles these days--John Saul and Ray Bradbury have had games released. But
these are usually licensing deals--typically there is a writer/designer on
staff who works with the "famous" author's stories. Another thing that's
happening is that game companies will sometimes hire lesser-known writers
to come in and write their framing story and dialogue for, say, a space
simulation game. So yes, I think there is opportunity for prose writers to
work on interactive projects. The bad news is that in the past few years
the trend in the gaming industry has been to move away from story and
toward action shooters. This doesn't leave many story-based titles for
writers to participate in. But like all trends, there will likely be a
story comeback in the future.
DR: Which is what they keep saying about Hollywood films! Considering the
many similarities between movies and computer games, I wonder if you've
given any thought to screenwriting? Would you like to turn Gabriel Knight
into a movie or write a screenplay for MILLENNIUM RISING?
JJ: Working on games has caused me to see stories more visually. So when I
was working on MILLENNIUM RISING, I did see it in my head like a film. I
have had some experience working with voice-over and live filming on the
games and I enjoyed it very much--it's a pleasure to see your work come
alive through an actor's interpretation. In other words, I would love to
see a film made of any of my work! As for writing a screenplay myself, I
might at some point, if I find a story that is best told as a film. But in
general, I think I'd rather write the novel and let someone else adapt a
screenplay if it comes to that. You can get deeper inside a character's
head in prose.
DR: In a way, books are the original interactive gaming technology. Yet
it's common for literary critics and writers to bemoan the rise of
computers and hypertextual systems, including computer games such as
Gabriel Knight with strong narrative components. How would you respond to
these critics?
JJ: It does seem as if the publishing industry is a little behind the
technological times. However, I think with the increasing importance of the
Internet, the realm of electronic interactivity is becoming more and more a
part of everyone's life. Interactive fiction is simply a logical adjunct to
that. I believe the stigma on interactive work is similar to that attached
to the comic book industry. When people hear "computer game" they think
Mario. Hardly a medium in which one would expect to find art. But it is an
art form, just like films and, yes, even comics. Of course, there are a lot
of market-targeted bloodfests out there, but, really, isn't the same true
of film? Of even books? In books it's not bloodfests, it's romance
novels--different target audiences, same brain-candy mentality. The work of
Neil Gaiman and Art Spiegelman has shown that the comic medium can be a
powerful voice. What attracted me to the gaming world wasn't really the
word "gaming" but the word "interactive." Interactive fiction--that's a
powerful concept, and one that has not been taken anywhere near its true
potential yet.
DR: What is that potential?
JJ: Hmmm. I suppose my ultimate interactive story would be set in virtual
reality--where you are physically the main character and you can walk
around and explore a whole setting--such as a seedy noir town. You would be
able to interact with people and objects in any way you can think of and
get realistic responses while uncovering the "story" that the writer has
woven into this world for you. Think STAR TREK's holodeck meets Quentin
Tarantino (or if that's too scary, Michael Crichton). Any storyteller is
weaving a kind of spell over the readers--making them identify with the
main character. Interactivity has the potential to strengthen this bond
between character and player tremendously, making the story much more
powerful psychologically.
DR: What sets MILLENNIUM RISING apart from other works of fiction with
millennial themes that have been appearing for the last few years?
JJ: What interested me in doing a millennium project was not the Book of
Revelation per se but the cross-referencing of prophecy--how so many
different prophecies from so many different times and cultures and places
all said similar things. I was first turned on to this by one of John
Hogue's books: THE MILLENNIUM BOOK OF PROPHECY: 777 VISIONS AND PREDICTIONS
FROM NOSTRADAMUS, EDGAR CAYCE. In that book, Hogue cross-references
prophecies from all over, and I found that both fascinating and terrifying.
How could you explain these prophecies matching each other? Or that some of
these ancient prophecies seemed to foresee things like ICBMs? So I decided
to do a story about it. I think what sets MILLENNIUM RISING apart from
other titles I've grazed over in the bookstores is that they are either
written from a fundamentalist Christian point of view--which MILLENNIUM
RISING most certainly is not (to say the least)--or they are fairly
standard Armageddon-like or HOT ZONE-like disaster thrillers. I hope that
what MILLENNIUM RISING is really about--what it felt like to me as I was
writing it--is our fears and self-doubts as a species on a global,
cross-cultural level. There are certain things we share across cultural
boundaries--a need for love, a need to believe that there's something after
death, and this strange, almost guilt-laden apocalyptic fear and vision. I
believe that no matter how modern, rational, and skeptical we think
ourselves to be, that fear is still there, just under the surface.
MILLENNIUM RISING is a thriller, and I have tried to make it very
entertaining, but what I value more about it is that it gets into
philosophical, religious, and sociological issues that are deeper than most
thrillers attempt to deal with. That's where I felt I've really added
myself to the book, and where I hope people will find something unique,
something that will stick with them.
DR: It's not just prophecy you're talking about here, but mythology. Do I
detect the influence of Joseph Campbell?
JJ: Could be! I have read a bit of Campbell and Jung, though I'm skeptical
about taking the "collective unconscious" thing too far. Still, I do think
that there are "attractions" and "repellants" that we all share, symbols
that we respond to instinctively--and that they probably do have to do with
one of two obsessions: sex or death. (To anticipate your question, I guess
I must be death-obsessed, since MILLENNIUM RISING has lots of philosophy
and religion and very little of . . . well, you know . . . sex.
DR: While MILLENNIUM RISING draws much of its apocalyptic imagery and
language from Revelation, it's grounded in rigorous scientific
extrapolation, especially in the field of genetics. What I found
fascinating was that you didn't simply set these two systems of looking at
the world in opposition to each other but instead mingled them in
surprising and complicated ways. By the end of the book, the reader isn't
quite certain anymore what, if anything, divides science and religion. Is
our world today moving in this direction with the resurgence of
fundamentalism on the one hand and the staggering advances in
science--especially with genetic engineering and virtual computer
technology--on the other?
JJ: Science is very magical, particularly advanced science. What's the
difference between the kinds of photographs we get back from Hubble and the
mystical vision that a shaman might have of the cosmos? Or between
genetically engineering perfect humans and the ideas of angels or of
immortality? Which is more fantastical? One of the things that struck me
when I first began studying prophecy was that you read something like,
"There will be let loose living fire and hidden death, Horror inside
dreadful globes. By night the city will be reduced to dust by the fleet."
That was written by Nostradamus in the sixteenth century. Sounds like
nonsense, or some kind of weird magical imagery--until you connect it with
nuclear submarines. That was part of the fun of this project--to take
prophecy and try to think what these prophecies might mean in a modern
setting. Modern technology is very much a magical realm--to the ancients.
But yes, I do think there is a kind of merging between science and
mysticism going on--you see it in a lot of nonfiction books by such authors
as Paul Davies, Guy Murchie, and Fritjof Capra. I've tried to lend this
flavor to MILLENNIUM RISING.
DR: Your descriptions of the ways in which people react as the plagues and
signs predicted in Revelation begin to take place around the globe are
totally believable. You seem almost to have made a study of the psychology
of mass hysteria and religious ecstasy. Are these subjects of long-standing
interest to you?

JJ: I have been interested in religion and philosophy for some time, yes.
But I think the reactions you see in MILLENNIUM RISING are more based on my
own feelings--trying to imagine how I would resist believing in such
circumstances and then eventually be convinced. Because in my heart I am,
and I think many people these days are, a "good times agnostic." Meaning
that I would like to believe in some religious system but can't really
convince the rational part of myself. It's that Tree of Knowledge
problem--I've almost learned too much for my own good. Yet when things get
dicey I tend to start praying real fast! Certainly, part of me really would
love to have something magical happen so I could be convinced. There's a
lot of that sentiment in MILLENNIUM RISING. Some of the other points of
view in the story are based on people I have known. Growing up as I did in
a fundamentalist church, I have heard the viewpoints of--and argued
with--many who were devoutly religious. So I have a pretty good
understanding (or so I presume) of their perspective, and I tried to
imagine their responses to events in MILLENNIUM RISING as well.
DR: Is it that fundamentalist background that enabled you to so effectively
create the character of Stanton?
JJ: I suppose he is a product of my roots, or rather of my own filter of
it. Stanton is my favorite character in the book. It's almost too easy to
do a televangelist, but he seems to me at least to have a kind of gritty
reality all his own. His voice was the most entertaining to write and, I
have to admit it, the way his mind worked cracked me up. On the other hand,
I find Trent Andrews one of the scariest characters--perhaps he just
reflects my feelings about L.A.! Deauchez and Hill are both aspects of
myself--and as such they play more "straight guy" roles in the mix of these
"vibrant personalities."
DR: Are the various technologies employed in your novel based on actually
existing technologies? How real is this aspect of the book?
JJ: Some of the technological aspects of the book, such as HAARP (High
Frequency Active Auroral Research Program), are based on existing
technologies or are extrapolated from research results. There are a few
things that probably (hopefully!) do not currently exist but could. I ran
some of the more wild ideas past expert advisers to help me keep within the
bounds of reason. I think that's extremely important--again it's the modern
reason vs. faith conflict. In order to reach someone's core of belief you
have to get past their reason first--it's a kind of defensive linebacker,
as Stanton would say. Getting past it is my job, and that's where science
is a very useful tool for a writer.
DR: Are you driven as a writer more by characters or by plot?
JJ: I'm definitely more driven by plot. That has to come first for me.
Ideally, I write the entire plot out in detail before I begin. At that
point, I can let go of worrying about "what happens next" in the book; the
plot becomes a framework from which I can hang the real stuff of the
story--the prose voice, the character psychology, and the sort of
philosophical musing which is my favorite (and no doubt most
self-indulgent) part. In his class on storytelling (which I took years ago
and which has influenced me tremendously), Robert McKee advocates plotting
in detail as the first step. And what he says about it is that by the time
you actually finish all that and allow yourself to sit down and write the
story itself, the characters will be so hungry for life, having been stuck
in your head for so long, that they will literally write themselves. I find
that to be very true. Much of the characters' external qualities and quirks
are developed as part of the plot line, but when I sit down to write the
prose they really come to life--sometimes even causing changes in the
plot--better ideas--which I didn't foresee.
DR: What are some of the other influences on your development as a writer?
JJ: As I've gotten older, I've become more conscious of what interests me
in life and what subjects I want to write about. As a teenager I read a lot
of horror--Stephen King, et al. That developed into an interest in the
supernatural and I began reading nonfiction--ghosts and spiritualism, ESP,
alchemy, demonology (never to practice, mind--I'm far too scared of the
stuff to have any interest in practicing it!). After a time that matured
into an interest in the more "colorful" religions such as Voudoun,
Hinduism, even Catholicism (which seemed colorful to me, at least, having
been raised in a more puritanical setting). In the past ten years, I've
increasingly moved toward general comparative religion, religious history,
and philosophy. My writing, by no coincidence, is making a similar
progression. All of these things have something in common--an attempt to
define and explore the mysteries of life--the big questions. Some do it in
more symbolic, darker, or metaphorical ways than others. All of my work
tends to develop from an interest I have in some particular subject--such
as prophecy for MILLENNIUM RISING. But all my subjects have that one source
in common. I hope that as my work continues to mature I can explore the
themes of philosophy and religion more and more directly.
DR: How would you characterize the effects of your fundamentalist
upbringing on your writing?
JJ: I suppose that very early on I rejected certain tenets of the Christian
faith--such as the belief that if you weren't a born-again Christian you
would go to Hell. That just never made sense to me. So at the end of time,
God looks around and nintey percent of all the humans who have ever lived
are in Hell and he's . . . won? What about all those genuinely nice
Buddhists? As a result, I left the church at an early age. But I guess I
inherited from my father (who was a minister) a deep interest in the
metaphysical. I just don't have a nice box to wrap it up in. I guess I'm
still searching for some kind of answer, and my writing is a result of that
quest and perhaps even a part of it. At the very least, the things that
interest me all end up in my work.
DR: Is MILLENNIUM RISING the first book in a series? Will there be a gaming
tie-in?
JJ: I suppose there could be a follow-up to MILLENNIUM RISING, but I'm not
planning one at the moment. There are no plans for a game--the story is too
epic to fit a development budget! Besides, I think MILLENNIUM RISING will
have a better chance as a novel if isn't related to games in any way--to
avoid any of the "stigma" you mentioned in an earlier question.
DR: What are you reading now?
JJ: I just finished Gore Vidal's CREATION and have started PARADISE LOST by
Milton, which relates to my next project. I'm also listening to a fabulous
audiotape series from the Teaching Company called "Great Minds of the
Western Intellectual Tradition."
DR: Can you tell us anything about your next project?
JJ: I'm currently working on the plot for my next Del Rey book. It involves
new physics and cabala and I'm very excited about it. It's another "big
project" and will be quite a challenge, but I rarely let myself off the
hook and do anything easy!
DR: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? How should someone
interested in writing as a career prepare for a future that seems as full
of uncertainty as it is of promise?
JJ: The first thing I'd advise is to read a lot--what comes off your pen is
only as interesting as what goes into your head. The better writers you
read, the more sophistication your voice will develop. Read Shakespeare and
Tolstoy as well as Rushdie and Oates--unless your goal is truly genre, then
read the classic works in your chosen field. Second, don't make the mistake
of expecting to be a "born writer" and not to have to work at it. It's my
belief that, just as in professional sports, being a great writer takes
innate talent and years of hard work. Also, writing is a very competitive
realm--expect to move slowly. Any opportunity to write for a living--be it
journalism or editorial or even technical writing--is a good place to get
your feet wet. Most important, don't allow yourself to get discouraged. I
"gave up" writing several times out of lack of progress or frustration with
the level of my own work. But your work will improve with practice, and
doors do open if you knock long and hard enough. Few writers will ever be
able to sustain themselves by writing alone--I'm certainly not convinced
that I will be able to achieve that long-term. But writing is its own
reward--and addiction. If it isn't, the journey probably is not worth it
for you.

Монитор тоже передает информацию в мозг. Не напрямую, а через глаза и

А вот Гибсон написал книжку о том, что матрице ЗАХОТЕЛОСЬ повыпендриваться.
И написал хорошо, талантливо. И описал, как именно матрица выпендривалась.
Hе вдаваясь в технические подробности (какие могут быть подробности у
вымышленного киберспейса?). А потом пришел Шумил и сказал: "не могет такого
быть. Потому что я не верю". Мысль эта, крайне глубокая и великолепно
обоснованная ("камни с неба падать не могут!"), вызвала у меня желание
ее оспорить. Но твоя манера вести спор у меня это желание успешно подавила.
Всего хорошего, я из спора вышел.

В матpице до фига молодых зеленых ковбоев с крутыми амбициями,
которые хотели бы выглядеть повнушительнее. Если они так не выглядят,
значит, есть предохранительный механизм, который НЕ ДАЕТ им так
выглядеть. Свою крутость надо подтвеpдить. У Джентри и компании
для этого нет ни технических средств (канал связи), ни вpемени.
И главное - они в этом не заинтеpесованы. Это - одна из крупнейших
натяжек pомана. Никому из персонажей нет смысла высвечиваться
перед всем миpом.

То же самое, что тебя остановит. Когда люди делают технику, они делают
ее ПОД ЗАДАЧУ. Матрица - не господь бог, и физических законов нарушать
не может. Если хозяин компьютера хочет устроить из своего компа
проходной двор - он устpоит. Но если не хочет - закроет ДЛЯ ВСЕХ. В
том числе и для матpицы. Тебе очень хочется чудес. А мне - SF. Разница
в том, что чудо отменяет логику и здравый смысл. Короче, превращает
SF в низкопробную компьютерную опеpу.

Черт, я опять огребусь, но можно вспомнить и прямо обратный пример - когда
мне потребовалось
выписать эти самые 10 литров _медицинского_спирта для промывки
металлических
зеркал (от технического и от метилового оставался беловатый налет) мне
отказали.
Именно обьяснив тем, что я все пропью .
